Untamed wildlife

Wild horses of Letea Forest

Long before fences and farmhouses, herds of semi‑feral horses roamed the sandy ridges of Letea. Today more than 2,000 still drift between ancient oak groves and open steppe, manes whipping in the sea breeze. We approach quietly on foot at golden hour, when the herd silhouettes against the sky and starlings circle overhead. Their untamed energy sets the tone for every safari that follows—this is Europe’s last true river wilderness.

Hidden marsh & steppe life

Step gently into the willow shade and the forest seems empty—until a golden jackal materialises, amber eyes locked on you before melting back into green shadow. Moments later, a European pond turtle surfaces on a sun‑warmed log, gold‑flecked shell gleaming like river treasure. Out on the open steppe, nomadic goat and sheep herds raise dusty clouds as they drift homeward, echoing scenes that have played out here for centuries. From predator to grazer, the Delta’s food‑chain drama unfolds in a single afternoon’s walk.

Dusk — When the Delta changes shift

As daylight bleeds into ember orange, reed beds whisper and dragonflies dart in the cooling air. The river mirrors a sky that can’t decide between violet and gold, turning the channel into liquid light. Frogs tune up, a distant bittern “booms,” and silhouettes of willows frame a moment so still you can hear the soft splash of a fish breaking the surface. Dusk here isn’t the end of the day; it’s the prologue to an all‑night symphony.
